Wireless Philadelphia Contract Not Finalized Yet

Although the announcement of Wireless Philadelphia's agreeement with EarthLink to build the citywide network was met with great fanfare a couple of months ago, a contract has yet to be signed between the two parties. Obviously, this is going to delay the deployment of the much-anticipated network, which is going to take about a year to build, although some parts of the city will be hooked up quicker than others.

Both sides say the basic deal is finished, but EarthLink notes the final contract cannot be signed until there is a consensus regarding the city allowing the company to place wireless-transmission devices to city light poles and other municipal property. To further complicate matters, the contract has to be approved by the City Council, which doesn't meet again until January 24.

It's a shame that an official contract hasn't been signed yet--there was so much momentum for this project just a few short months ago. Hopefully, the project will get back on track within 30 days time.
