The new $39 WiFi IP phone from
HOP-ON, Inc. allows users to make secure calls from any location that has a
hotspot. According to the company, the HOP1502 handset has everything that a VoIP terminal adapter has and the ability
for users to make calls from a WiFi access point.
The phone's features include 3.5 hours of talk time; a 102 x 650 pixel backlit LCD; 30 hours of standby time; room for 200 phone book entries; and 6 ringtones.

3. Is wifi the best technology to use for voice communications in the home or out and about? There are a number of companies springing up that are looking at GSM/3G home base-stations linked to broadband for free Skype-like home telephony from your mobile (cell) phone. It strikes me that someone would make a lot of money building these and hitting a price point of around $100. The problem may be that the operators own the rights to the spectrum! Oh dear.

5. The phone is made by NEC. It's the MH-210. Not yet on sale though. The price will likely be in the $500 range.

8. My question is this? Why would people want to make a cell phone call from a Wi-Fi Hot spot when they can make a cell phone call from anywhere? It seems that people will buy anything weather it is useful or not.
I believe that Wi-Fi hot spots are a step backward from the third Generation technology (GDSM) that is powering the Cell Phones based on 3G Spectrums to acquire which Cell Phone Service Providers will spend billions of Dollars worldwide.
It seems to me that the most logical next step is to develop an internet service that can be accessed by the use of cell phones (not Wi-Fi cell phones but any cell phones that are capable of sending Text Messages) rather than to use the Wi-Fi phones to make phone Calls from HOT SPOTs.
This can be done by redeveloping the Internet Infrastructure so that the roles of Clients and Servers are redeveloped. The new role of the Clients in the redeveloped Internet Infrastructure would be limited to sending surfing Commands to the remote servers which would not be required to send any documents or files to the Clients. Instead the Servers would process the Commands themselves and display the results.
This will put the spammers and Hackers out of business. The primary benificiaries of such a way of accessing the internet would be telecoms and manufacturers of Cell Phones and their revenues would rise exponentially. It'd be to their advantage to financially support the development of such a way of accessing the Internet.
