Intel's Grantsdale Chipset To Ship With Wireless Features Turned Off

As my blogging partner Mike Outmesguine has pointed out so elquently, wardriving mobile computers are wreaking havoc on all types of wireless communications. In what may turn out to be a leading example of a way to beat back the wardrivers, Intel says it will be shipping its new Grantsdale chipset with its wireless features turned off by default in an attempt to prevent the spread of unsecured access points.

Will this move make a difference? You can bet that IT managers will have their say soon enough.

If nothing else, the introduction of Grantsdale will focus much-needed attention on wireless security issues. In addition to the access points they've installed themselves, IT managers have already begun to fight the spread of so-called "rogue" access points, such as a worker installing a cheap access point for his or her own convenience.
